We really like this funky little eco-resort. While it is not super luxurious, the bungalows are totally comfortable. And the undersea world in incredible. A great place to relax for a few days.

Chumbe Island Coral Park is located just off the coast of Stone Town, Zanzibar. It sits in a privately managed nature reserve and is a rare example of a still pristine coral island ecosystem. The bungalows are designed to provide both privacy and a sense of freedom of living in the open. All bungalows feature comfy beds, en-suite bathrooms with a hot/cold shower and lounge areas with handmade furniture. Vibrant splashes of colors throughout reflect the turquoise waters and beautiful coral reefs hiding below.

Being green is very important at Chumbe Island - there are rain water collection systems that filter water, and then it is hand pumped through a solar heating system for re-use. Water from showers and basins is filtered and used in specially sealed plant beds so that no polluted water enters the Reef Sanctuary. Lights are solar paneled and open designs give maximum drafts, so air conditioning is not needed. Composting toilets ensure that no sewage enters the sea.

Activities include snorkeling and scuba diving in the very unique reef sanctuary which is home to nearly 200 different species of coral, and home to more than 350 species of fish, sea turtles and lobsters. A dazzling stretch of white sandy beach stretches out in front of the bungalows. With the deep turquoise waters lapping along one edge and a delicate fringe of swaying palms along the other, it's the perfect place to sunbathe or stroll leisurely.
